On Becoming a Kit Builder
There are more reasons and ways to enjoy the R.C. hobby than there are models in the sky. Some just like to fly, some like the tech, and some are in it for access to great experiences and funny stories. Hobbies are cool like that, the only rule is be in it for the fun. If you have been involved in this hobby long enough to find a reason to love it you have surely fallen in love with a model. I challenge you to build one of the kits on this site and fly it a dozen times. If at the end of your dozen flights you don't have a new favorite plane you might want to check your pulse. You will probably have a new favorite plane before you fly it the first time, and this makes for an amazing maiden flight experience.
By the time you have completed a kit you know every stick, stitch, and drop of glue in that plane. There is a good chance you have glued yourself to it a few times and you might even have bleed a little for your newest model. For the extra time and effort you will have a truly unique model. You are not encouraged to customize your kit, you are required to as part of the building process. At the very least the final look comes down to covering, and you get to create the look you want. You do not go to an event and see two kits that are alike. Take a look at some of the pictures posted on this site for more examples than you can shake an Ugly Stick at.
I know there are some of you that are already worried about what you don't know about building a kit. I know this because not that long ago I was one of you. Your thought process just has to be, "If I let what I didn't know stop me I would never have flown a model." Think about all the things you had to learn to get where you are now, and how much you have gained through learning to fly. Hopefully reflecting on your path through our hobby will be all the inspiration you need to try something new.
The only way to understand kit building is to experience it. Most of us have built more foamies than we can remember. Some of those skills will help you in your first balsa build, so you have a head-start you didn't know about. While the skills will help you on your way, do not equate the feeling of finishing a foam kit with the elation of completing a balsa kit. It can't be explained, it must be experienced.
